I can not advice on the best way to make it happen since I am still failing to make it happen for me. But, at least in my case, having straight forward conversation was a bad decision. She said no. And now every move I make to go in that direction or even speak about the topic - she recognises what I am doing and is stopping it immediately.
The soft and longer way is probably better. Obviously there are women which already want it and straight forward conversation works fine, but that's not actually convincing, it's just getting on the same page.
